Chapter I

Monsters of Magdalore

By Ankit Sanghi

15th day in the year of Ood:

It has been 4 days since my ship arrived at Sentoso, the landing colony that we have established on the great continent of Magdalore.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. Many of my loved ones had said their farewells to me as though it would be the last time they saw me. I can only hope to prove them wrong.

I have found lodgings at a local inn here, though it is actually the only inn. The only ones who are crazy enough to come here are either treasure hungry or have gone insane. I suppose I would fall in the latter.

My first few days have been spent acclimating to the torrid weather. There is no way to cool off here, and so I have taken to documentation to keep myself distracted.

What beautiful creatures there are here! Avians with iridescent plumage and blood red breasts, rodents with scarcely any fur on them and jet black eyes. I’m like a little girl in a candy store here.

These wondrous specimens are not why I am here however. The shoreline species have been well documented. My mission is grander.

The markets here had remedies and rumours for the dangers of the jungles ahead. Many of the locals here spoke of a rather curious creature. It was a large owl like creature that roosted on the branches of a great tree, about three days march from town. They say that those who look upon the winged creature begin to feel drowsy and are at risk of falling off the tree. I must see it.

I have made preparations for the journey and back. Tomorrow, I shall set off towards the great tree that the locals call “Boababa”.
